UUMANNAQ - QILAQITSOQ

“Heart shaped,”  population about 1,500. Uummannaq island is at 70 degrees north, 600 km north of the Arctic Circle and it is famed as Greenland’s sunniest spot, also one of the driest places in the country.

We visited the Katersungaasivik Museum, the lovely church and had an exceptional visit to a private house.  It was located 170 steps up from the main road… These folks really keep in shape with all the hills and climbing of long wooded stairways that they do.

Our hostess’ husband, was one of the brothers who found the famed Greenland mummies.  We were offered coffee cakes, homemade donut balls and a most delicious dessert, made with grated apple and pear with blueberries, vanilla and piskefløde
