PUNTA ARENAS
FAIRYTALE LANDSCAPES AT THE END OF THE WORLD
PATAGONIA, the very word evokes wild landscapes and adventure, huge spires of mountains and turquoise lakes.
We spent ten wonderful days at the end of February 2011 traveling from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales to Parque Nacional de Torres del Paine in southern Chile.
We were incredibly fortunate with weather on our flight from Santiago in that the clouds were parted. So often on that flight one sees nothing.
Our flight landed in Punto Arenas, the largest city in that part of the world, the capitol of Patagonia. It has a population of 55,000 and is at a latitude of 53 degrees south. It has been a prosperous city thanks to sheep, gas and now tourism.
From there, we drove (247 km, 153 miles) to Puerto Natales, founded May 1911, population 20,000, a gateway to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine….. we toured the local area around Puerto Natales, a fishing village and tourist mecca.
