Known as the Venice of the North, Bruges was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Exuding charm, it is one of the best preserved Medieval cities in Europe.  The population is 117,073 (as of 2008), with 20,000 living in the historic center of the city. Bruge is the capital of the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the NW part of the country.
